The thought hadn't occurred to me, but it's totally possible. 3am to 6am would be a true test of willpower. I'd have to do something that keeps me awake, but not too interested, or I might miss a minute!

My consolation and growing regret is that I will never own this clock.

I don't see what the big deal is...I mean, Isn't this a site for "Art/Designer Toys"?

Art-The product or process of deliberately arranging items in a way that influences and affects one or more of the senses, emotions, and intellect.

Toy-A toy is any object that can be used for play. Toys are usually associated with children and pets. Playing with toys is training the young for their social role. Many items are designed to serve as toys, but goods produced for other purposes can also be used.

Please correct me if im wrong, but if I wanna play with a clock then it becomes a toy...

Designer - A designer is an agent that "specifies the structural properties of a design object"

Art + Design + Toy = An object used for play, developed through specification of the structural properties arranged in a way that influences and affects one or more of the senses, emotions, and intellect.

A designer toy is created by a designer, developing a piece of art (not re-creating a piece from other properties) for the purposes of play.

Still, thats very broad and I wouldn't consider a clock a designer toy or even a toy.

There are lots of sites that are for general collecting but Rotocasted about having a place that is for cataloguing toys created for the purpose of art/design.

This is a clock, it may have a character on it but it isn't a toy.

is not. they come unassembled, so keychaining qee is an option. you can wear almost anything as a keychain, but you wouldn't put in your toy collection. and the point was that this revoltech is much more a collectible toy than a keychain.

  • elissa_s

    elissa_s

I think a debate could go on for ages about what can be deemed a toy suitable for Rotocasted, but I thought Rotocasted started for collectible toys i.e. art toys and designer vinyl. I wouldn't class this figure as either. It's an anime related action figure, which I class as something completely different... but then again, the 'Type' tag is there to differentiate between all the toys and their kind, so I don't see why all toys can't be on this site as long as their correctly tagged as whatever kind of toy they are. I was just saying about the keychains thing, because everyone by now is probably aware of my slight Yummy Breakfast addiction, and although it is a keychain, I see them as mini art toys, because of their humble beginnings as Heidi Kenney's handmade felt creations. Then obviously Kidrobot got involved and saw the potential to bring her creations to a wider audience.
I just clicked on the 'Keychain' tag to see what else I can make examples of, and although I can't stand Kaws, the keychains of his are in a way, shrunk versions of his actual art toys, which is pretty good for people who can't shell out hundreds for one of his proper figures. Anyway, I could write all day about this, but I think I've got my point across.

The problem is some things should definitely be on here and some things definitely shouldn't, and then there are a lot of of things that maybe could be on here. But once you put the grey area stuff, then the things that shouldn't be here start appearing.
Am I making myself clear? :p
I, for one, think mascots and advertising figures are a definite no no. Others are strictly against toys of characters from movies or comics. It gets complicated.

The toy world itself is pretty ambiguous and we've been having this discussion in different forms for a while.

  • larzor

    larzor

    340 182 58

Isn't the whole movement a little bit of a grey area? The whole idea is to find the essence of toys and make art with that essence in mind, if I understand it correctly and if you don't accept toys as art you've kinda missed the point and it's all about wether or not some one tells you it's a cool, rare and expensive piece rather than up to your own tastes. Of course this makes it impossible for me to objectively dismiss toys that I personally don't like…
There are a lot of things here that might clearly be art, but that aren't toys, like for instance the busts of Mao with Mickey Mouse ears. That should fall within the grey area aswell (or even be immediately dismissed), since it's a sculpture rather than a toy.
My opinion is, allow everything, but make it easy to sort through it with clear classifications and such as. People will always have different opinions as to what is art and what is beautiful.
    But then again, I'm new here… :)

Ah, damn! There's nothing worse than knowing you had the chance but didn't grab it! I did the same with the cutest little Nibbler from Futurama once. It was priced around $ 25, but I did just like you. Years later I was forced to pay waaaay more for it on ebay *sigh*.
I've been a hardcore Mignola fan for years, so when I saw these action toys I just had to own them. But again...some years too late, so I had to go with the Rocket Pack Hellboy, which I believe is from series 2 ?

Yeah, way worse than buying something rather pricey and then realise you could have bought it much cheaper if you had just done some research or waited a little :P But there's always new chances to buy stuff at exactly the right time…
What I'm really interested in right now is either one of the 18-inch Hellboys or the special edition Hellboy with the uncensored Herman von Klempt head. I think my chances at aquiring the former is slightly higher :)
Until then I'll have to settle for my Big Blast one.

Uncensored Herman von Klempt head? You mean with the swastika on his forehead? But he came with the Kriegaffe!! Just looked at mine....and yes, I think it must be censored. The sign looks more like an X than a swastika. Didn't really notice it till now, because I let them stay in the clam shell widow box. Censorship in toys? C'mon Mezco!
    P.S. I have the 18-inch of course. ;)

I'm not a huge fan but I know the history of the band and it's designs, but still I think it's a wind-up music memorabilia toy more then a designer toy.
The porpoise of this toy (as it seems) is to be play with and not to be "admired" as a piece of art, I think it's plastic not vinyl and the quality (again as it seems) is not high and more fit to a child mess produced "made in China" toy.

I found some bootlegs of this one on eBay. They're yellow or orange instead of pink and Pitty is smiling, which I thought was kinda funny. It's like they saw the potential of making profit from copying an overpriced designer-toy and selling it for a fraction of the price, but also figured they could aim them to kids or parents as a regular child-friendly toy of a happy kid playing with a cute teddy bear :)

I think bootlegs are great for everyone (who isn't bothered about having the original!). Bootlegs that are a parody of the original piece are cool IMO, bootlegs trying to pretend to be the originals are a different kettle of fish.

I have previously mentioned I don't like KAWS and I am not going to talk about KAWS as everyone has their own opinion about how original his creations are (I do consider them to be over priced pop art fyi)

Bootlegging devalues everything for everyone. Justifying it's fine just because the original one is expensive or the artist has "sold out" doesn't make it valid.

    - Someone is making money off of someone's work.

    - Devalues the brand/design, (which is the WORST thing) by having it in all these dodgy bootleg stores/flooding the market/low quality/consumers not understanding the product. NOT only for KAWS but for all designer toys.

    - Someone may potentially be fooled. (Bootleg companies don't give a shit about their market) Just because you are "in the know" and it seems VERY clear its a bootleg, not everyone will.

    - Official prices rise (this is a common practice by official companies to set the bootlegers clearly apart for consumer) This may also sets a price range for other designer toys.

Official re-productions are fine, just like posters of artwork. Yet most paintings are in the public domain anyway. Then again, paintings are a poor example as its not like someone is re-producing the brush strokes.

Is there a tipping point for finding what is considered "ok" to bootleg? What if some company decided to bootleg Uamou?

I don't know how you can say I am missing the point? I said bootlegs are not good for anyone and you voiced other opinions, so I explained my stance. Devaluing through residual effects is very damaging.

To say that everyone knows the price point is a bit off. I first saw KAWS in a music mag, many people buy various culture mags on a whim. People truly do not know the market price of various toys. People still are shocked at the designer toys around the 50-80 mark, they wouldn't expect something to be much more than that for a KAWS piece.

People do not instantly understand the designer toy market; pricing and what artist is what. People are coming in from all directions and can easily be mislead.

I am sure you have friends that don't collect but have found some of your pieces really cool without knowing the price point, official packaging or where to get it from. Or friends that are shocked when you say "you might not want to drop that as it cost $200"

I am talking about bootlegs as a generalisation, it affects any market it touches. Companies pushing up market price point to distinguish it isn't a bootleg, is a common marketing strategy in other production fields.

A company can still be affected by the residual effect of bootlegs, even if they are not making direct profit off of the limited release they did. They release the next variant and people don't buy it as they have already purchased the previous bootlegged version for example or they don't buy their products any more as they want a level of exclusivity.

I agree with your stance on KR and their "limited' runs, yet its not a reason to bootleg them.

Bootlegs are not good for anyone as the residual effects affect the designer toy market as a whole.

    - A legit store trying to sell official products can't compete vs the bootleg store down the street.

Stores selling bootlegs may not know who designed them and/or know they are "designer toys". They would have just ordered them from one of their suppliers thinking it was cool and not have known it was a bootleg.

    - Suppliers don't sit back for hours doing research, they may be dealing with a whole seller that deals 10% in bootlegs without knowing it. Something slips through the cracks to store fronts with the belief that it is legit.

    - It won't stop at KAWS (and hasn't) for bootlegging and will continue on.

    - Bootlegs can get VERY close to the original and almost perfect quality. This can be easily witnessed with the bootleg anime toy scene.

Bootleg suppliers have a HUGE market share in various places around the world. Even my small little china town is filled with various bootleg products of toys the general consumer wouldn't know was a "designer" piece. A bootleg manufacture might come across Uamou design take it up and flood the market with it.

If someone buys a bootleg knowing it is a bootleg for the mentioned reasons above, good for them if they are happy. Yet it isn't good for the market at all and to believe otherwise is part of the problem with bootlegging.

Nice you can see it but I know a lot of people who would mistake them for the original, good to know and identify the fakes and the authentic figures

They look cheap to me. The biggest difference between these and the real thing is that these are at least 5 or 6 inches shorter than the genuine Companions. It's not too difficult to spot that difference. Plus they look very shiny. The original Companions are matte.

I don't really like the Kaws figures, but I would love to own something like this simply because it's a fake of something really exclusive. I think I may want it more than an original :)

WTF is this doing here? This is NOT a bootleg, it's counterfeit, shouldn't even be listed here.

I think someone made a mistake on this one. This isn't the one that just came out- that's the loser edition. Only 5 of these were made- not the small ears, blond hair and frown on Noop's face.

    Name was correct before.
The loser edition is the "large public edition" (x200) with the brown-hair-noop.
The blond edition is a run of 5, in resin (not vinyl).
