I had the exact same thought! :D
Steve Purcell should totally do some toy designs.
I chatted him up once on Facebook (*brag*) and he told me he want to make toys but never gets around to it... -

this one is gorgeous...
I ordered a couple of blind boxes for the heck of it, for a tiny chance at this, the Hernandez or the Beast Brothers Dunny, 'cause I don't shell out the big moneys for the little toys on Ebay :P
I'm saving up for some larger rare pieces. -
-
These will go down in price with time. Some have gone for as low as USD 80. These are 1/400, which is the same ratio as the Easy Hey in the French series, which used to be a lot pricier and now commands around USD 75.

-

The biggest attraction is that it is rare and it's worth a lot of money. Then some like to complete their series. Not many mini toys that can be sold at such an inflated price as a rare dunny can!
-
I am not a fan of KR or dunny but I think this one is nice. The design matches the form well :D
As they would have unique tooling just for this piece, would KR ever re-release this one? -
14 years ago
I suppose I'm not a conventional toy collector then, I only go for things like Qees and Dunnys that catch my eye, with the exception of things like the Toxic Swamp series and others...

I'm like Elissa - I don't care about the rarity of things, just if I love them or not.
And I do like Dunnys a lot, and I really like this one.
But I don't chase Dunnys and I don't pay high prices for them - I rather save my money for things that actually cost a lot because of high production costs rather then rarity in the market. Which is why I'll probably never own this Dunny. I still like the design.
I don't like chases at all, and as an artist I'm not going to do them. -
-
Lordsketch, you're in an awfully agree-with-Elissa-able mood today :) Blindboxes give a thrill, and fair enough if you happen to luckily stumble across a chase, but in the cases of old series of toys and such, there's no other way than to track them down on eBay or Doc18's bad ass Toy Boot Sale and suchlike :)
-
I also enjoy opening blind boxes :P but I have never really understood why people go crazy for dunny. Then again I am not a platform collector. I do have a few funky colour variants but I have never paid more for a chase figure.
On the note of crazy collector; I have dealt with a few crazies over the years. Once this dude bought every single tomb raider bust (7 in stock at the time) just because he didn't want anyone else to have it. I told the dude I would still order more in, he didnt care and came back and bought the 3 others. It wasn't a rare piece, it was just some shitty tomb raider bust. I normally wouldn't have dealt with tomb raider but a few people custom ordered it so I got a few extras.
I still don't know why he did it.... ebay I guess, I never followed ebay prices :P it may have been rare but I was able to order plenty from one supplier. Yet I really didn't want this guy to waste his money ... -
14 years ago
Maybe he had some disturbing Lara Croft obsession? Or would he have 'flipped' them? I read an old issue of Clutter magazine the other day and I've only just found out what flipping is, so I feel wary of using the word :)
-
blind boxes have nothing good for the collectors, just to make them buy more :P it is getting silly now that mini figures are mostly blind boxed and costing so much. For 3/4 minis you can get a nice large figure.
I try to keep to the artists that I like and a few of them happen to work with KR a lot that makes me buy lots of Dunnys to get them :P Luckily in this series the 1/400 is not one of my fav. artists :) -

I guess the Dunnys hit very high prices because there are a lot of people collecting them.
I don't collect minis very much, except for artists I really like and older ones I think are super cool (like Neo Kaiju Project). But I like Dunnys and they have a lot of cool designs and they're fairly cheap if you're not after everything or the special chases.
I collect *toys* and I don't have any special sub-category like I collect this artist or that, or this platform, I just like what I like and get it if I can, which is why my collection is pretty eclectic. There are artists I would like to have more figures from if I could afford it, sure, but I'm not into multiple colorways and all that.
I'm against completeist-ism and I don't think one should pay through the roof for a chase.
I even don't like the word "collector" cause that implies having something for the sake of having it, and it's really not what I"m doing - I like to have beautiful things, great art and stuff that makes me happy. -

This is a really good conversation to have. A CUSTOM can be a one-of-a-kind original (especially if the customizer has gone above and beyond to make something new out of the original toy). However, a ONE-OF-A-KIND ORIGINAL is not typically going to be a CUSTOM. In the case here, the talented Jimmy Foo has created an original figure with his own original sculpt. This would only be a custom, if Jimmy writes that underneath the purple, there is a Munny in there somewhere :)
-
-
There are talks in multiple toy commentaries on Rotocasted. My reasoning for what is classified a custom:
Custom: Uses another toy as its platform, including re-casting parts. Therefore customising a toy.
Original: Creating a sculpt without use of another toy as its platform. An original toy. -
14 years ago
I feel there is a difference between "customizing" and "custom". I would define taking a platform toy and painting it or making it your own would be customizing or customization, however, making your own one of a kind toy would be a custom (as in custom made). IMHO.
-
As toy design as we know it is relatively new, it may be helpful to reference an older practice to define the nature of the beast.
In furniture design, the term "custom made" tends to be only used if you were commissioned to do a unique piece for someone. The person commissioning the piece would set the design specifications for the custom made furniture, not the designer.
One of a kind pieces get made in furniture design often and are not considered custom pieces but new designs.
English language seems to lack the words required for this subject :P The interpretation of words like 'original' and 'custom' can easily become out of context. -

I think in this instance the term 'custom' is being confused with customised. Imo, to customise is to take an existing object and make alterations. A custom is essentially a commission with some kind of client brief. However, I regard this piece to be neither of the above as it's an original design....soooo... Between Jeremy and CoMus I'd say it's pretty much covered.

I'd say yes, but I think the mods are still trying to iron out what clearly defines a custom, and I think George made about 20 of these. See here....
http://rotocasted.com/toy/8278/ -
Sorry... It seriously seems like everything I do here is wrong. :/
I figured since they were wax sculpts that were molded and cast in resin in a number greater than one that they were just a low run resin toy. I was considering the cast head sculpt as the actual limited production piece.
I think I'm going to refrain from posting anything else. I don't want to mess up the site. -
14 years ago
Post away, don't worry, the mods are here to tidy things up if nessecary.
there is a friendly debate going on over what constitutes a "custom". I don't think anyone minds, just helps to know what section we should put things in.
It's all good :) -
Cool... I try my best to help out here with pics and info. This is honestly one of the best sites on the webbernets, and I recommend it to everyone I know who collects toys.
I personally think a custom is a one-of-a-kind thing made using an existing toy as a platform... I can see why the Skull Dunny would be lumped in with the customs because of the use of the Dunny body. The skull, however, still makes me think more of a low run resin toy.
I'm fine with it being in whatever section everyone decides it needs to be in... it's a GREAT figure no matter what! ;) -
14 years ago
I am not really a fan of dunnys, but this is awesome. I would like one of his custom skulls, it looks even better with no body!
-
I'd like to pipe in and say this is a custom. I took someone Else's Dunny and changed and added to it, hence made it a custom. I don't think it should matter how many there are. (which by the way is now more than 20) There was no closed number of these, and more can be made if someone wants. You can contact me through the Toy Break forum.
-
As I am not an artist (I am an industrial designer) my views come from a production side. I agree with George, once a figure is used as a platform its a custom.
I wouldn't consider it a "custom" if it was a production release by the original company, then again Mark Nagata makes many "customs" and releases them.
I am starting to think there should be a few "custom" categories.
BTW Welcome George :) -
Welcome to the site George, about time (joke).
Dropped you an email about the custom dunny. -
14 years ago
Great to hear the artists view. I have just ordered one of these skull dunnys, and a couple of custom skulls. Can't wait to add these to my collection.
As for the "custom" discussion, I have submitted a few pieces to the custom section. The koibito is a one of a kind color way by the artist. I would say this is a custom.
http://rotocasted.com/toy/8387/
The blobpus is a one of a kind color way for an exhibition, although it is also part of a limited run of 15?
http://rotocasted.com/toy/8421/
I'm not sure if the eyezons are custom? They are hand painted
and of a limited run of six.

I think Huck Gee called his limitied releases "production customs".
to me it seems simple - if it's based on an existing toy - it's a custom. if there's more then one, it's a "production custom" or however you want to call it, but having multiples doesn't make it less of a custom. -

No! The silver ink is still smearing days after the fact! I feel like if the wind blows on it, it might just disappear. Ron signed it a second time in black Sharpie on the back of the torso, and that's nice and dry and crisp. I think he did both of your autographs in the silver pen, right? Maybe you should ask Kozik for a tip on how to dry it... :)

I'll take photos of this when it comes in. Stoked that these old MINDstyle colorways were a warehouse find. SKWAK is one of the most underrated artists in this scene. His art feels like the inside of my head.

This is a sweet piece, and you can find them pretty cheaply on eBay due to some distributor clearance. They were originally priced at upwards of $100, and they're going at around $30 now. LOVE SKWAK! Even without all the color, he's great :)

actually, as far as I know, Mindstyle bad name is due to their shadiness in the relation with the artists (not paying them, not sending their APs), not about quality. I own toys from 2 series by Mindstyle (Mechtorians & serv-o-matics) and the quality is great.
jeremyriad

Yeah same as amavevera, I've been told TONS of awful stuff about MINDstyle's ethics and operations, but if it's possible to put all that aside, the toys themselves are done really well. If you compare SKWAK's Maniac to SKWAK's KR Dunny, you can see what I mean. I only wish 1) MINDstyle didn't treat its artists so badly and 2) There was a green colorway of this piece :)

How do they treat them bad? Not pay them for their work? Do they say "we are making a toy of your artwork, that is your payment"?
Interested in this I am.

Me too. I'm trying to find time to write an article about it, but in the meantime, ask any artist who has worked with MINDstyle. I've found most to be quite open to talking about it. For instance, Sket One and SKWAK.
CoMus

It would make an interesting article! I wonder what they will say? It may be hard for the toy producers to write up a contract for correct payment? Especially considering they are bearing all the risk!
But my approach is from a product design background. Many designers work on products that don't sell but then you get one that sells like mad. Its great for portfolio (if the company lets you use it) but you were only paid an hourly rate (and/or lump sum) and the company is making millions off of a product you designed as they did all the extra legwork.
Yet as a toy, you are directly selling it for art,you would think the payment would be something like this: (A lump sum upfront) + (% royalties) + (Correct exposure, such as artists name on box)
Who knows, looking forward to your article when you do it (check out some product designer horror stories too :P)

OMG Mindstyle is my favorite toy maker. I love their toy quality and the boxes that toys come in are amazing and high quality. I haven't heard of this shadi-ness though I can tell you, that I emailed Skwak a year ago to ask if he had any of the Maniac colorways and he emailed me back to say no, but if I ever found them, he'd like one. So apparently he didn't get his artists proofs.
I just bought the black/black and the black/blue off ebay for 29.95 SCORE. I have ALL Skwaks stuffz. :)
