SB: "This figure was painted for the looks and was not painted as we normally paint soft vinyl figures. This figure is painted chrome on a soft vinyl base, but the paint itself is not meant for soft vinyl surfaces. On the surface of these figures, there is a possibility that there will be cracks or even paint peeled. But we have painted these figures as best as we can to make it look as clean as possible. Please be advised that the cracks and peels are not damaged figures and we do not accept returns or exchanges on this product. Please do not display this figure near anything that may produce heat or on any unstable areas. If the figure is bumped or fallen, this may create additional damages to the surface of the figure Please keep these information in mind when ordering."

Glad I didn't pick one up now. Sounds a bit below par.

I dunno about "below par". There are marks on the surface but that is going to happen when you try to meld chrome with a vinyl surface. They are pretty incompatible materials. As long as you take care and understand this before going in the figure is pretty damn cool. There is a "chrome" effect paint out there that is amazing looking but it is extremely exotic and ridiculously expensive. It looked amazing on a BMW M3 but isn't cost effective for small figures like these unfortunately.

I dunno, If I paid the price these were, I'd want a toy where the paint isn't going to flake off everytime it took a knock.

It doesn't flake. If I had to describe it I would almost say it crackles kind of like certain types of pottery glazes. If you dig a fingernail into it then yes you can take out a chunk but otherwise you just get these super fine hairline fractures in the paint.
